Saving Money in 2013

It’s not a secret to those around me that I like to spend money. One of my love languages is gift giving, which can include presents for holidays, unexpected gifts or buying a coffee or meal for someone I’m meeting with. None of these are bad things, but it’s also not great when these things prevent you from saving for your future.

I was talking with my sister recently and she asked if I wanted to do a money challenge with her. I hesitantly asked what exactly she was talking about. She said she had found a chart on Pinterest about a “new” way to save and by the end of the year, you would have over $1300. I was interested, for sure.

Back story: my sister has ALWAYS been good about saving money, even growing up. She lived minimally and this has helped her as she recently got married. On the other hand, if I were to get married tomorrow {don’t worry, I’m not}, I would be in trouble.

I took a look at my sister’s pin, but unfortunately, it doesn’t link to the original person who started this. Upon looking all over Google, I still wasn’t able to find the direct source. I did, however, find the less busy chart below.

Since I enjoy sharing the different aspects of my life, I thought I would share this with you. Yes, I do have a savings account and I will still be setting funds aside there. However, I love the idea of having another place for savings that involves small increments each week.

We are on the third week in 2013, so I have $6 in my savings jar. It makes me excited to see those little dollars bills adding up and knowing I’ll have accumulated more than $1300 by the end of the year.

Want to take on this challenge with me? With a new year in full gear, let’s make it a year of GOOD habits and bettering ourselves. :)

  1. This is so great! It is so hard for me to save money… But, since getting married I realized how important it is. Especially since Jonny was in a car accident, we have to buy a new car. On top of planning a reception. On top of paying down debt. And saving to buy a house. BAH! This would have been much easier if I had been saving money. I wish I could join in with you, but every extra cent has a place to go. But, definitely pinning this and will think about it for next year (when we’re saving for a house).

    1. Lisa, I will for sure be doing a post at the end of the year! You totally read my mind. :)

  2. This is a really awesome idea! I did not grow up as a saver, so I was always living cheque to cheque… But then I met my husband who is incredible at saving, and I learned so much! I am so grateful to have picked up so many of his habits… It’s such a nice feeling to know there’s a rainy day fund if we need it. Good luck to you, and enjoy the $1300 jar at the end of the year… How satisfying that will be!

  3. I’m on board BIG time! I’m not a good saver and it has to change…for the better. I love this idea. Small can add up to big in no time. A year goes by so quickly, so I know this will be painless! :)

  4. I’m a penny pincher and extremely careful with my money. A few of my friends are doing this type of “saving” as a new years resolution. One friend has decided that she will put EVERY $5 bill she receives as change or whatnot into a jar. Only the $5.
Which I love the concept of, but I rarely have cash:( I pay for everything with a Debit card so it’s taken directly from my bank account. However, one of MY resolutions was to pay for everything with cash if my kids are with me. I don’t want them to think that a plastic card (even one attached to a bank account) is a MAGIC card that can get them anything they want. So now that I have been withdrawing cash from the bank I have lots of change and bills:) I might just attempt something like this!
I think its great that you know one of your love languages though:) Ironically enough, I scored a ZERO in the “gifts” category! LOL Apparently they are not a big thing with me…as least not as much as “words” are.

  5. Love this! So timely, too, as we are in the middle of developing this year’s spending plan (aka budget). Can’t wait to share it with my husband (he’s sleeping, otherwise I’d do it now).

  6. I love this idea and I am going to try it. I think it will be hard to do the last few weeks since it will be right at Christmas, but I am still going to do it.
